If using thinly sliced beef, slice it against the grain into small strips. If using ground beef, no slicing is needed.
Slice the bell pepper, shallots, and chop the garlic and Thai chilies. Have all your ingredients ready to go for quick cooking.
Step 2: Cook the Beef
In a large skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. If using sliced beef, stir-fry it for 2-3 minutes until cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside.
Step 3: Sauté the Aromatics
In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Add the minced garlic, sliced shallots, and chopped chilies. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant and softened.
Step 4: Add the Sauce
Stir in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and brown sugar. Add the water or beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about 3-4 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
Step 5: Combine the Beef and Basil
Return the cooked beef to the skillet and stir to coat it in the sauce. Add the sliced bell pepper and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the peppers soften slightly. Stir in the fresh basil leaves and cook for an additional minute until the basil wilts and becomes fragrant.
Step 6: Serve and Garnish
Serve the Thai Basil Beef over a bed of hot jasmine rice. Garnish with lime wedges and optional chopped peanuts for added crunch and flavor.
