Old-Fashioned Cake Donuts – Crispy Outside, Soft Inside!

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.

Mix Wet Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Shape the Donuts:
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters (one large and one small) to cut out the donut shapes.

Fry the Donuts:
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the donuts in batches for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy on the outside. Remove the donuts and drain on paper towels.

Optional Toppings:
Once the donuts have cooled slightly, dust with powdered sugar or dip them in a glaze if desired.
