Add the ground beef (or your choice of meat) and cook until browned, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks.
Once the meat is fully cooked, stir in the thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Add the beef broth and stir to combine. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Remove from heat and set aside.
Step 2: Make the Mashed Potatoes
If you don’t have prepared mashed potatoes, cook and mash about 4 large potatoes with butter, cream or milk, salt, and pepper to taste. For extra creaminess, you can also add sour cream or cream cheese.
Step 3: Assemble the Casserole
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Spread the meat mixture evenly in the bottom of a greased baking dish (about 9×9 inches or similar).
Carefully spread the mashed potatoes over the meat layer, smoothing them out to cover the meat completely.
Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top of the mashed potatoes.
For extra richness, dot the top with small bits of butter or drizzle with a little melted butter.
Step 4: Bake
Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and the casserole is heated through.
Step 5: Serve
Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve hot, and enjoy!
