French Toast Bake: A Make-Ahead Sweet and Savory Breakfast Deligh

Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
Cut the loaf of French bread or challah into 1-inch cubes and spread them evenly in the prepared baking dish. For best results, use slightly stale bread or toast the bread cubes lightly before assembling the bake.
Make the Custard:

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and a pinch of salt. Mix until smooth and well-combined.
Assemble the Bake:

Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes in the baking dish, making sure all of the bread is soaked.
Gently press down on the bread with a spoon to ensure it absorbs the custard mixture fully. If you have time, cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1-2 hours or overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
Bake:

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
After the bread has absorbed the custard, bake it in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden and crispy and the center is set.
Serve:

Let the French toast bake cool for a few minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup for extra sweetness.
