Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, warm milk, and sugar. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Sprinkle the dry yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy and bubbly. This indicates the yeast is active and ready.
Make the Dough: Once the yeast mixture is ready, add the salt and gradually mix in flour (about 4 cups, or as needed for dough consistency). Stir until a soft dough forms.
Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour.
Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
Shape the Buns: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place them on a greased baking sheet, arranging them close together to encourage them to rise higher during baking.
Second Rise: Cover the shaped buns with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes until they puff up.
Bake the Buns: Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown on top. Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
