Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil or butter over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through (about 7-8 minutes). Drain any excess grease and set the beef aside.
Sauté the Onion and Garlic: In the same skillet, add the diced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Create the Gravy Base: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring constantly to create a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
Add the Beef Broth: Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps from forming. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency. Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using) to taste.
Combine the Beef and Gravy: Add the cooked ground beef back into the skillet and stir to combine. Let the beef simmer in the gravy for an additional 3-4 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
Serve Over Mashed Potatoes: Spoon the ground beef and gravy mixture generously over a bed of warm mashed potatoes. Serve hot and enjoy!
