Classic Homemade Breadsticks: A Timeless Treat

In a small bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until the dough begins to come together.

Knead the dough for about 5–7 minutes on a floured surface, until it’s smooth and elastic.

2. Let the Dough Rise:

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

3. Shape the Breadsticks:

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Punch down the dough and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.

Cut the dough into 12 strips using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.

4. Bake the Breadsticks:

Place the breadsticks onto a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.

Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the breadsticks are golden brown.

5. Brush with Butter:

While the breadsticks are baking, melt butter in the microwave. Once the breadsticks are out of the oven, brush them with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder, Parmesan cheese, and oregano (if using).
