In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently to dissolve. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active and ready to use.
Make the Dough:
In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture, along with the softened butter (and oil, if using). Stir until the dough starts to come together.
Knead the Dough:
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed. The dough should be smooth and elastic when finished.
First Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Shape the Dough:
After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release any air bubbles. Turn it out onto a floured surface and shape it into a loaf by folding the edges in towards the center and rolling it up from one end. Tuck the sides and pinch the seam to seal.
Second Rise:
Place the shaped dough into a greased loaf pan and cover it with a towel. Let it rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until it has risen about an inch above the top of the pan.
Bake the Bread:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once the dough has finished rising, place it in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown, and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. If you prefer a darker crust, bake for a few extra minutes.
Cool and Slice:
Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice once cooled, and enjoy your fresh homemade bread!
