Once baked, allow the cake to cool completely before slicing it in half horizontally to create two layers.
2. Prepare the Custard:
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and milk together, then add to the saucepan with the dry ingredients.
Heat over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble.
Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Let the custard cool to room temperature before spreading it over the bottom layer of the cake.
