The Fastest Method to Propagate a Sansevieria (Snake Plant)

Choose a Healthy Leaf: Select a healthy leaf from your Sansevieria plant. Ensure it’s free from any damage or disease. A mature, long leaf is ideal for propagation.

Cut the Leaf: Using a sharp, clean knife or scissors, cut the leaf into sections about 4-6 inches long. Make sure to cut straight across (not at an angle) to ensure proper rooting.

Allow to Dry (Optional but Recommended): Place the cut leaf sections in a dry, warm place for a day or two. This helps the cut end to callus over, which prevents the propagation section from rotting when planted in soil.

Place in Water (Optional): You can either propagate your leaf sections in water or directly in soil. To propagate in water, place the cut ends of the leaf sections in a jar or glass of water, ensuring they are submerged about 1-2 inches. Change the water every 2-3 days to keep it fresh.

You can also skip the water step and plant the cuttings directly into well-draining soil. Make a small hole in the soil, place the leaf cutting in it, and gently press the soil around the cutting to keep it upright.

Wait for Roots to Form: If propagating in water, you should see roots start to develop in about 2-4 weeks. Once the roots are about 2 inches long, you can transfer the cuttings into the soil. If propagating in soil, it may take a little longer (about 4-6 weeks) to see any signs of rooting.

Plant and Care: Once the roots are established, plant your rooted cuttings into small pots with well-draining potting mix. Keep them in a warm, indirect light location and water lightly. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings to avoid root rot. Sansevierias are drought-tolerant and prefer to be kept on the dry side.
