Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil and cook the pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Prepare the Meat Sauce:
In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add the ground beef or Italian sausage to the skillet and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
Stir in the marinara sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce over low heat for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
Assemble the Bake:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta, meat sauce, and ricotta cheese. Stir until well combined.
Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread it out evenly.
Top with the shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese.
Bake:
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20-25 minutes.
After 20-25 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown on top.
Serve:
Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
