Remove the Tray: Most washing machines have a removable detergent tray. Pull it out carefully, making sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions if you’re unsure how to do this.
Soak the Tray: Fill a basin or sink with warm water. Add about 1 cup of white vinegar to help break down detergent build-up, mold, or soap scum. Submerge the tray and let it soak for 15-20 minutes.
Scrub the Tray: After soaking, use a soft cloth, sponge, or old toothbrush to scrub away any remaining detergent residue, soap scum, or mold. Focus on the corners and edges where buildup tends to accumulate. You can sprinkle a little baking soda on stubborn spots to provide extra scrubbing power.
Rinse and Dry: Once the tray is clean, rinse it thoroughly with warm water to remove any remaining vinegar and baking soda. Dry it completely with a clean cloth before reinserting it back into the washing machine.
Clean the Tray Compartment: While the tray is soaking, it’s a good idea to clean the compartment where the tray sits. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe down the inside of the compartment. You can also use an old toothbrush to scrub around the edges.
