Fluffy Homemade Buns: Soft, Light, and Perfectly Pillowy

In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then sprinkle the yeast over the top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy and bubbly. If the yeast doesn’t foam, it may be expired, so try with a new packet.
Step 2: Make the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture, melted butter, salt, and egg.
Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a dough begins to form.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to add too much, as this can result in dense buns.
Step 3: First Rise
Coat a large bowl with vegetable oil. Place the dough in the bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Step 4: Shape the Buns
After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air.
Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and roll each piece into a ball.
Place the balls of dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Step 5: Second Rise
Cover the shaped buns with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they have puffed up and are almost touching each other.
Step 6: Bake
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Brush the tops of the buns with a small amount of milk for a glossy finish (optional).
Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
Step 7: Cool and Serve
Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
Once they have cooled slightly, slice and serve.
