Prepare the bread slices:
Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice.
Assemble the croque-monsieur:
On one slice of bread (buttered side facing out), place a slice of ham, followed by a slice of cheese. Top with another slice of bread (buttered side facing out). Repeat this process for the remaining croques.
Add the cream:
Place the croques in an oven-safe dish. Spread a spoonful of heavy cream over the top of each croque.
Add the grated cheese:
Generously sprinkle grated cheese on top of each croque. Season with a little salt and pepper to taste.
Bake:
Put the dish in the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
Serve hot:
Serve your croque-monsieur hot, with a side of green salad for a balanced meal.
