In a nonstick skillet, brown the ground beef or sausage with the diced onion, breaking the meat apart as it cooks.
Add the garlic, Italian seasoning, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, pasta sauce, and tomato sauce. Stir everything together, then set aside.
Step 2: Make the Ricotta Mixture
In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, basil, Parmesan cheese, and 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Stir until well combined.
Step 3: Layer the Ziti
Grease the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker.
Pour 1/3 of the sauce mixture into the bottom, followed by 1/3 of the uncooked ziti pasta.
Add 1/2 of the ricotta cheese mixture on top of the pasta. Repeat the layers with the remaining sauce, ziti, and ricotta mixture.
Top the final layer with the remaining ziti and sauce.
Step 4: Cook
Cover and cook on HIGH for 2 1/2 hours or on LOW for 4 to 6 hours. Be cautious not to overcook, as the ziti can become soggy.
Once cooked, remove the lid and sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese on top. Cover for just a few minutes until the cheese is melted.
Step 5: Serve
Serve hot and enjoy!
