Bicarbonate of Soda: The Garden’s Secret Weapon – 10 Intelligent Uses for Plants

Powdery mildew is a common problem for plants, especially in humid conditions. A mixture of 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil, and 1 liter of water can be sprayed on plants to help eliminate this white, powdery fungus.

4. Clean Plant Leaves
Baking soda is an excellent natural cleaner for your plants. Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 liter of water and use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down the leaves. This helps remove dust, dirt, and any pests that may be clinging to the foliage.

5. Prevent Damping-Off Disease
Damping-off is a soil-borne fungal disease that affects seedlings and young plants. Prevent this by adding a small amount of baking soda to the soil before planting seeds. It will help deter the growth of harmful fungi and promote healthy seedling development.

6. Treat Ants and Aphids
Baking soda can be used to repel ants and aphids. Sprinkle a little baking soda around the base of plants or on the soil where ants are present. For aphids, mix baking soda with water and spray it on the plants to keep these tiny pests at bay.

7. Sweeten Tomatoes
If you’re growing tomatoes, adding a bit of baking soda to the soil can help reduce acidity and enhance the sweetness of the fruits. Sprinkle a small amount around the base of the plant in the early stages of growth, and water it in.
