Baked Ziti with Sausage

In a large skillet or saucepan, cook the ground Italian sausage over medium heat until browned and crumbled, about 5-7 minutes.
Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until softened and fragrant.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20-25 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
2. Cook the Ziti:
While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain the pasta and set aside.
3. Assemble the Baked Ziti:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti pasta with the sausage tomato sauce. Stir to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce.
Pour the pasta mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top.
4. Bake:
Bake the ziti in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. For a golden, crispy top, broil for the last 2-3 minutes of baking.
5. Serve:
Let the baked ziti cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with extra Parmesan cheese and fresh basil if desired.
